As Boulder welcomes the spring season, residents should brace for increased bear sightings as the animals awaken from their winter slumber. According to the City of Boulder, with bears regularly roaming in areas where humans live and work, locals are advised to be vigilant and proactive. Encounters with black bears, though frequent, should be handled with care. Residents spotting bears within city limits are guided to contact the non-emergency dispatch at 303-441-3333 and keep a safe distance.
Boulder is essentially a shared space between nature and human habitation; the town's geography makes up a mosaic where wildlife, such as bears and mountain lions, frequently cross paths with the community. To minimize the risks of bear-related incidents, city officials recommend several preventive measures. Among which, the importance of locking up trash has been underscored, a seemingly mundane act that bears great significance, as bears drawn to easily accessible food might linger, potentially leading to dangerous situations or fatal outcomes for the animals.
City regulations stipulate the use of bear-resistant containers west of Broadway and south of Sumac Avenue. Boulder, Colorado's official announcement underlines the necessity for bear-proof waste management systems, especially as bear sightings have surged east of Broadway in recent years. Residents are encouraged to contact their waste haulers for bear-resistant trash and compost bins to better safeguard the local bear population and the community, as stated by the City of Boulder.
Apart from being cautious with waste, residents should also secure their livestock, fruit trees, and bird feeders, which are known attractants for bears. In recent years, the number of goats fallen prey to the animals has increased, according to the City of Boulder. Keeping goats, chickens, bees, and even hummingbird feeders in protected enclosures is imperative, as the feeders, especially, are a tantalizing and easy source of calories for bears, which should be removed during active seasons.
