An arrest has been made in Washington County involving a 24-year-old man from California who was caught attempting to scam an elderly woman. The man, identified as an Indian national and asylum seeker, was apprehended during a sting operation conducted by the Washington County Sheriff's Office, which shared details of the case on social media. The suspect, taken into custody on Wednesday, is being held at the Washington County Jail with an ICE detainer in place due to his immigration status.
The incident that led to his capture began with a deceptive email claiming to be from a tech support service, which the intended victim—an older resident of the Village of Richfield—received. The email announced a subscription fee that led her to unwittingly grant the scammers access to her bank account. Following this breach, they manipulated her account to show a bogus refund. She then got a phone call demanding the 'refund' be returned via Bitcoin or via a cash pickup. Wisely suspicious, she contacted the authorities. The sheriff's office responded by coordinating with the woman to arrange a cash pickup at her home. As per the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the suspect arrived for the cash and was detained without any trouble.
The suspect's confession revealed a broader web of deceit spanning beyond Wisconsin, as he attested to conducting similar operations across the nation. His travel expenses were reportedly paid for by individuals assumed to be relatives living in India, and he was yet to receive payment for his fraudulent efforts. In a statement obtained by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect admitted he was sent to the victim's house with the aim of not just collecting the packaged money but also to coax her into withdrawing the entirety of her bank savings.
"It’s deeply troubling when someone seeking asylum in our country is then accused of exploiting the very compassion and support offered to them—especially at the expense of our vulnerable elderly population," Sheriff Martin Schulteis commented on the arrest. After his immigration status came to light, federal immigration enforcement was notified. Currently, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and U.S Customs and, Immigration Enforcement (ICE) are jointly involved as the investigation progresses.
