
In an effort to spotlight mental health during the month of May, the town of Carrboro is hosting a series of Mental Health Mondays in collaboration with the Carrboro Police Department (CPD) and the Diversion Social Worker. Set within the welcoming confines of the Drakeford Library Complex at 203 S. Greensboro St., these events offer a blend of discussion, light refreshments, and interactive activities from 12 to 2 p.m., detailed on the town's official announcement.
May 5 marks the first session titled "Diversion Programs in Orange County," which aims to acquaint visitors with the Criminal Justice Resource Department's efforts to provide alternatives to the traditional justice process, the subsequent Mondays will also tackle topics essential to understanding and supporting mental health within the community, the second event on May 12 themed "C.I.T. in the CPD" provides insights into the role and benefits of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Officer, including an opportunity for children to engage through a 911 Role Play and a segment called "Conversations with a Cop".
The closing event on May 19, described aptly as "Self-Care & Compassion", delves into the personal dimension, posing the pivotal question, "What does self-care look like?" and invites attendees to explore the myriad faces of nurturing oneself. This series, aligned with Mental Health Awareness Month, highlights Carrboro's commitment to fostering dialogue and resources around mental health, offering a structured yet informal setting where the community can conjoin, learn, and find support, as per the Town of Carrboro's official announcement.
Declaring that knowledge and conversation can be powerful salves in addressing mental health challenges, the CPD and the Diversion Social Worker aspire to shed light on the stigma that often shadows this critical aspect of well-being through a mingling of education, activities, and real-world applications of support techniques the aim is to provide tangible tools and insights to support oneself and others, affirming the importance of mental health literacy and community cohesion.
