In what was described as a small but significant bust, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Eagle Pass Port of Entry managed to intercept a hefty stash of cocaine worth over $491,000. The seizure occurred on the Camino Real International Bridge where U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers flagged a 2014 Ford pickup for a more thorough check.
According to a report by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the vehicle was driven by a 57-year-old female Mexican citizen. Officers decided, based on undisclosed reasons, to subject the pickup to secondary examination. This included a combination of nonintrusive inspection equipment and a well-trained canine team, which together managed to quickly and accurately pinpoint the hidden narcotics. A total of 16 packages were uncovered, containing 36.81 pounds (16.70 kg) of alleged cocaine.
The meticulous search paid off when U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers extracted the cocaine stash neatly concealed within the vehicle. The drugs have an estimated street value of exactly $491,581, a sum that reflects not just the weight but the shadow cast by addictive substances on communities across the nation.
Pete Beattie, the Eagle Pass Port of Entry Port Director, in a statement obtained by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, lauded his team's efforts, remarking, "Our frontline CBP officers applied their inspection skills, training and technology and seized a compact but significant amount of cocaine." He went on to sternly warn that "Seizures like these reinforce CBP’s border security mission and aptly illustrate that attempts to bring in controlled substances can result in serious criminal consequences."
Following the find, U.S. Customs and Border Protection OFO officials seized both the narcotics and the vehicle. The driver didn't manage to escape the sharp eyes of border security and was taken into custody. Homeland Security Investigations special agents stepped in to arrest the driver and initiate a full-fledged criminal investigation of the case.
