The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Lumin8 Transportation Technologies are set to rev up work once again on the I-70 Variable Speed Limit Signs Project on April 21. According to CDOT, motorists who frequent the I-70 stretch between Eagle-Vail and Vail have already seen several enhancements since the project commenced in May 2024, including the installation of 18 dynamic LED speed signs capable of modifying speed limits in response to road conditions and traffic flows.
For those who've managed to avoid the construction zones thus far, here's a heads-up on what's coming down the pike. Starting April 21, the eastbound right lane will be closed from Mile Point (MP) 168 to 173, a restriction that's in place Monday through Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m., and a similar closure will hit the westbound right lane from MP 173 to 168, Monday through Friday from 6 to 11 a.m. During these times, drivers will need to adhere to a 40 MPH speed limit through the work zone, all while being wary of construction vehicles that might enter and exit the area.
This final phase of work is more than just about slapping up signs, it's about creating a safer, more responsive driving environment. Inclusive in the project are weather information systems that inform speed adjustments based on factors like road friction and visibility. Also adding to safety are new guardrails that aim to keep vehicles from leaving the asphalt and limit severe accident scenarios.
