The City of Sacramento has provided the Sacramento Community Emergency Response Team with 150 children's life jackets for the 2024–2025 seasons. The life jackets are intended to enhance safety for children in local waterways, according to the City of Sacramento.
Sacramento Community Emergency Response Tea, a volunteer program focused on disaster preparedness, will distribute life jackets to improve the safety of young swimmers in the Sacramento and American Rivers. The jackets aim to protect against potential hazards like swift currents and hidden drop-offs. "Our core mission is to educate and equip Sacramento residents to face potential hazards, and these life jackets are a small yet powerful step toward that goal," said Emily Alexander, Sacramento Office of Emergency Management’s Emergency Management Coordinator. Drowning is a leading cause of accidental deaths among children, making these jackets an important preventive measure, as reported by the City of Sacramento.
Life jackets will be available at Tiscornia, Paradise, and Discovery Park beaches. The Sacramento Office of Emergency Management is partnering with the Sacramento Fire and Police Departments, Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment, and Sacramento Community Emergency Response Tea for the Annual Drowning Prevention training event. The event will focus on lifesaving skills and water safety, as stated by the City of Sacramento.
