The 40th Space Symposium in Colorado Springs set the stage for Governor Jared Polis and New Zealand's Space Minister Judith Collins to sign this game-changing agreement, as reported by the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade.
Emphasizing the fruits of this partnership, Governor Polis remarked, "We are thrilled to strengthen our relationship with New Zealand, a country that shares our commitment to supporting entrepreneurs and advancing new technologies like aerospace, geothermal and quantum. This agreement will help create more opportunities for investments into Colorado businesses and the creation of good new jobs," as per Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, detailing the vision for an intensified bilateral economic dynamism which is not just about the tech incubation it's about building an enduring bond that amplifies the shared ethos and the strategic expertise both Colorado and New Zealand can offer to each other.
The newly signed MoC is set to catalyze an increase in mutual direct investments, foster technological collaboration, and expand market access for companies in the two regions, to develop an innovative ecosystem conducive to the growth of strategic industries. According to the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, the provisions of this agreement stem from an April 2024 meeting between the two leaders wherein they resolved to actively push the boundaries of their industrial cooperation.
With a wealth of 29 New Zealand startups already thriving in the Denver area and bi-directional trade valued at a notable $61 million yearly, Colorado and New Zealand's synergy in trade and investment holds much promise, one that looks to burgeoning company exchanges, research, and technological advancement, offering tangible socioeconomic benefits including but not limited to the creation of jobs, the enmeshing of commercial ventures and the nurturing of the kindred spirits of innovation that both Colorado and New Zealand possess in spades. In acknowledgment of this potential, Eve Lieberman, OEDIT Executive Director, told the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, "Today’s announcement demonstrates the importance of building long-term relationships with our partners abroad. This milestone builds on years of cooperation with New Zealand to increase opportunities for startups and growing businesses while advancing new technologies, strengthening our economies and creating new jobs."
As part of the agreement's aftermath, a steering committee will be formed to oversee the implementation of the MoC's outlined objectives.
