Authorities have made an arrest in the case of stolen firefighting equipment valued at over $300,000 from the Columbus Division of Fire. NBC4i reports that the theft occurred on March 30, when suspects forcibly broke into the Columbus Division of Fire Training Academy on Parsons Avenue.
The heist involved entering the facility forcefully and stealing a marked Columbus Fire Department transport van. According to ABC6, an employee responding to the aftermath called 911, saying, "Someone cut the gate and then broke into our back training building and has stolen a bunch of our saws and equipment out of the building." This theft has noticeably impacted the training academy's routine operations.
Further details have emerged regarding the theft as court documents revealed a Chevrolet Avalanche truck was parked near the academy, seemingly serving as a lookout before the break-in. The orange truck, spotted in the area, is thought to have been involved in the theft following the stolen van off the property, as per the documentation from WBNS. GPS and video evidence tracked the van for about 30 miles through Franklin and Pickaway counties.
Ultimately, law enforcement identified 50-year-old Stephanie Ramirez as the suspect, whose truck matched the registration caught on the flock cameras. According to court documents detailed by WBNS, she is accused of "trespassing in the building on Parsons Avenue while fire department personnel were present and asleep on the property with a purpose to 'commit a criminal offense.' " As the investigation continues, the impact of the stolen equipment on the fire training academy's functioning is beginning to unravel further.
