Authorities have charged Vankese Russell, 26, with illegal firearm possession, a move that's part of a larger push to clamp down on violent crime in the District of Columbia. As part of the "Make D.C. Safe Again" initiative, U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr., ATF Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood, and MPD Chief Pamela Smith announced Russell's federal indictment. This program is aggressively targeting gun violence and federal firearms violations to secure tougher penalties and detention for violators, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Russell, who hails from the D.C. area, now faces charges in federal court for unlawful possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. On January 28, officers of the First District Crime Suppression Team in Chinatown apprehended a man following the public consumption of marijuana and the subsequent discovery of an illegal firearm. Court documents, as described, reveal that officers on patrol near 7th and H Streets NW sniffed out marijuana smoke and found Russell attempting to dispose of the evidence.
During the search that followed his arrest, officers uncovered a loaded .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun tucked in Russell's waistband. Russell's prior felony conviction in 2018 means he was barred from possessing any such weapon. The case, currently under investigation by the ATF Washington Field Office and the Metropolitan Police Department, will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kondi Kleinman.
