The Delaware State Police (DSP) is paying tribute to Corporal Dennis F. Kelly, whose name is set to grace law enforcement memorials, underscoring his deep commitment and sacrifice to the profession. According to an announcement on their official website, Kelly—affectionately known by his call sign "Combat"—was a seven-year veteran with the Delaware State Police Aviation Section.
In a tragic turn during a 1984 training exercise at Sussex County Municipal Airport, Kelly was involved in a helicopter crash that left him with severe injuries, leading to quadriplegia, despite which he lived another 40 years before complications claimed his life on December 21, 2024 Cpl. Kelly's perseverance and dedication to his role despite his life-changing injuries are a testament to the ethos of the Delaware State Police, who recognize such sacrifices as foundational to the ensuring of public safety in Delaware and nationwide.
Next month, the late corporal will be commemorated on the Delaware State Police Memorial at DSP Headquarters and the Delaware Law Enforcement Memorial in Dover, with his name set to be inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. the following year, as highlighted in the DSP statement. Colonel William D. Crotty, Superintendent of the Delaware State Police, honored Kelly’s resilience and contributions, saying, “His name will now be etched alongside our fallen heroes, where it rightfully belongs.”
Kelly's contribution was recognized by various officials, including Governor Matt Meyer and Joshua Bushweller, Secretary of the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security; Meyer acknowledged the intrinsic dangers of law enforcement and the "unforeseen challenges that come with their training," while Bushweller lamented the loss, stating, "His bravery and dedication will forever be remembered, and it is fitting that his name will now be enshrined alongside those who gave their lives in the line of duty," in an expression of solidarity and remembrance for his longstanding service. The DSP extends heartfelt condolences to Cpl. Kelly’s family, friends, and past colleagues and has invited the public to participate in National Police Week activities in May to honor Kelly and all fallen law enforcement officers.
