Montgomery County Police Officers were at the scene on a peaceful Sunday morning when chaos erupted as a driver made an alleged attempt to break through the barricades of a closed race route. The Pikes Peek race, a local sporting event expected to bring together community and athleticism, was unexpectedly disrupted around 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, as reported by the Montgomery County Police Department in a detailed account of the incident.
Driving a Jeep Wrangler, Karen Christine Gangloff of Derwood, was accused of disregarding the road closure at Redland Road where runners were gathered. Despite an officer's command instructing her to veer right onto southbound Frederick Road, Gangloff plowed through traffic cones and veered into a 7-Eleven parking lot. After the officer left to return to his cruiser, having attempted to direct the flow of events, Gangloff sped out of the parking lot, continuing recklessly on Frederick Road, according to official statements.
Efforts to stop Gangloff escalated quickly as she made a right turn onto a section of Metro Access Road, which was also closed off for the race. Officers pursued the defiant driver onto Redland Road, drawing them towards the pack of runners. In a strategic move to halt the Jeep, a police cruiser positioned itself in front, only to be rear-ended by Gangloff's vehicle. Adding to the escalating tension that morning, officers were compelled to break the driver’s window to apprehend Gangloff after her refusal to exit her vehicle willingly.
As the incident concluded, police uncovered a magazine containing five 9mm rounds inside the Jeep. Despite the presence of ammunition, no firearm was discovered at the scene. Gangloff was arrested and faces charges including first-degree assault and disorderly conduct, now being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
