The winds of change are sweeping through Detroit, at least regarding fire safety inspections. In a move that promises to cut red tape and empower local entrepreneurs, the Detroit Fire Department (DFD) has rolled out a new Self-Re-Inspection Program specifically tailored for small business owners. The initiative is geared towards those with premises under 2,000 square feet and without intricate fire safety systems, to swiftly address and rectify minor fire code violations without the need for a follow-up visit by fire inspectors.
According to the official Detroit Fire Department announcement, they'll have access to a digital Self-Re-Inspection Checklist, available in their fire inspection report sent by Tyler Tech (MobileEyes). This list is set to demystify the process, providing concrete pointers on common violations such as lighting exit signs, managing electrical concerns, and rightly placing fire extinguishers.
The city's fire safety officials are eager to see this program succeed. Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms, in a statement obtained by the Detroit Fire Department, pinpointed the broader benefit of this strategy: "The Detroit Fire Department is committed to working with our small business owners to create a safer city." Moreover, he touched upon the collaborative aspect of the program, which aims to build stronger bonds between the department and the business community.
