A 51-year-old Detroit man, Akida Diaba Dudley, has been arrested and is now facing charges for a series of sexual assaults that occurred between 1997 and 2004. Recent DNA testing of previously neglected rape kits has linked Dudley to at least three cases, though investigators suspect there may be more victims. The charges include three counts each of first-degree criminal sexual conduct (using a weapon) and third-degree criminal sexual conduct (force and coercion), as per reports from ClickOnDetroit and FOX 2 Detroit.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has been working since 2009 to sift through a backlog of untested sexual assault kits discovered in a Detroit Police Department storage facility in 2009. These kits date back to periods between 1984 through 2009. The task force's dedication has already resulted in 260 convictions, further emphasizing the importance of confronting such historical negligence. "The sexual assault kits in these cases are from the kits found in a DPD evidence storage facility in 2009. As of August 2025, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will have been continuously doing this work for 16 years," Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit.
The first reported assault, dating back to June 9, 1997, involved a 30-year-old woman who was forced into Dudley's car at knifepoint near a Detroit bus stop and subsequently assaulted. Another case from September 22, 1997, detailed an assault on a 16-year-old girl who was threatened with an ice pick before her assault. The third case on August 9, 2004, involved another teen, an 18-year-old girl, who was coerced into Dudley's car under the threat of violence and sexually assaulted. All three victims had sexual assault kits completed, which were crucial in linking the suspect to these crimes once they were eventually tested years later, CBS Detroit reported.
Dudley's arrest on Monday highlights both a grim chapter in Detroit's law enforcement history and a step toward justice for the survivors. He was denied bond and is set to appear in court for a probable cause conference on April 28 and has a preliminary examination scheduled for May 5. In the words of an Wayne County Prosecutor's Office's statement, "We support our courageous survivors who are willing to come forward and prosecute these cases after waiting for so long for justice," as per CBS News. Those with information or who believe they may be a victim are urged to contact the Wayne County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force at 313-224-2782.
