Douglas County is stirring the pot of local governance with its upcoming Special Election. On June 24, community members are faced with a pivotal question: Will they pave the way for their own Home Rule Charter? In the political equivalent of 'do it yourself,' this move could represent a significant shift in who calls the shots on local issues.

There's a clear roadmap for those who want to steer. Residents inclined to join the Home Rule Charter Commission can snag a Nomination Petition by contacting the Douglas County Elections team through their email at [email protected], or by swinging by the office on Stephanie Place. Candidacy isn’t a cakewalk, however, nominees need to rally 25 signatures from eligible county voters. They’ve got until 5 p.m., April 24, to submit their completed petitions, otherwise, they’re out of the race, according to Douglas County.

With the formation of the Commission on the line, voters will not only give a thumbs up or down on this initiative, but they'll also handpick who'll helm this charge. The ballot is set out like a buffet: choose six leaders from within each of the county's Commissioner Districts and tack on three at-large members for good measure.

The job of the Commission, should voters give the green light, is no weekend DIY project. Once elected, the group nets 240 days to draft a Home Rule Charter, then lob it onto the ballot for the Nov. 4 coordinated elections showdown. They’re expected to dive into their legislative crafting session within 30 days post-election, as mandated by the Douglas County Commissioners.
