Durham County Veteran Services is set to commemorate Memorial Day, also known as the National Day of Mourning, with an event dedicated to honoring those who have served and sacrificed for their country. The annual event, aimed at paying tribute to the memory of fallen service members, has been a longstanding tradition in the community.
The remembrance ceremony is open to the public and will take place on Monday, May 29 at 9 a.m. in Conference Room 126 of the Administration II Building, located at 201 E. Main St. According to a social media post from Durham County Government, the event will include a keynote address from Durham County Commissioner Stephen J. Valentine, a veteran of the United States Army, the Durham County Government says.
Also speaking at the event will be Durham County Assistant County Manager Julio Delgado, who alongside Commissioner Valentine, will elucidate the significance of the day for the community. In a video posted on the county government's official Facebook page, both officials reflected on the importance of remembering those who have given their lives in service of the nation. In the words of Commissioner Valentine, the day is crucial for ensuring that the sacrifices of our service members are never forgotten.
In a poignant gesture of remembrance, the event will also feature a roll call of Durham County's more than 350 known active-duty service members who died at war.
