Fayetteville's Raeford Road is set to receive a substantial upgrade with a $48 million overhaul initiated by the N.C. Department of Transportation, according to an official release last week. This promises to enhance safety and infrastructure along two key miles of the route, stretching from Bunce Road to Buckhead Creek.

A key feature of the revamp is the introduction of a raised median designed to curtail accidents—the effectiveness of which is backed by a NCDOT study from 2023 showing a dramatic 80% drop in serious crashes for roads with similar designs. Alongside this, drivers looking to enter from side roads with no traffic signals will face a new pattern, being rerouted to turn right in what is known as a reduced conflict intersection setup.

Branch Civil Inc. of Roanoke, Virginia, who won the contract, will also be spearheading various other improvements to Raeford Road. The project will replace older curbs, gutters, drainage systems, and relocate sub-surface water and sewer infrastructure. Commuters and pedestrians can also expect widened roads, intersections, and new sidewalks featuring pedestrian signals synchronized with the existing traffic lights. These enhancements aim to mirror the aesthetic and functionality of Skibo Road, another prime commercial thoroughfare in the city.

Construction work is poised to commence this spring with a prospective completion date in the fall of 2028. "The contractor will be required to maintain traffic on at least four of the six lanes during the daytime, but drivers could encounter more lane closures overnight, so they should slow down, obey all posted signs and be alert for workers and equipment through this section of Raeford Road during construction," states the NCDOT announcement. This project is an extension of prior work on Raeford Road, with earlier phases having begun as far back as 2022.

The incremental transformation of Raeford Road stands to reshape the artery into a safer, more navigable route within Fayetteville, bridging gaps not just in its pavement, but perhaps also linking its people closer to their city—and vice versa. The upgrades are likely to initiate a ripple effect of development, paralleling the city's growing demands for modern infrastructure that can bear the load of burgeoning traffic while protecting its travelers.
