Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto recently announced convictions in a disturbing case of child sexual abuse involving a former early childhood teacher. According to an article from the LA City Attorney's Office, Christopher Rodriguez, 51, who taught at UCLA’s Krieger Center of Early Care and Education, was found guilty on nine counts of sexual offenses against children.
These horrific crimes, committed between July and December 2023, included multiple counts of sexual battery with restraint, willful cruelty to a child, and sexual penetration with a foreign object. In a statement obtained by the LA City Attorney's Office, Feldstein Soto asserted that "Sexual abuse is among the most horrific violations to be committed upon anyone, especially children." Having detailed Rodriguez's crimes, she finds solace, believing that her office's efforts ensure "to hold accountable sex offenders and protect our children."
Rodriguez now faces up to seven and a half years in county jail and will be required to register as a sex offender. Sentencing is scheduled for May 9 at the Airport Courthouse. The full list of charges reflects the gravity of the offenses and underscores the city's commitment to combating sexual crimes against minors. Protecting these vulnerable members of society has been an avowed priority for Feldstein Soto’s administration.
The City Attorney's tenure has been marked by aggressive actions against sex crimes targeting minors, including disrupting sex trafficking along the Figueroa corridor. Legislative efforts in Sacramento are seeing Feldstein Soto’s hand in shaping laws to enhance penalties related to sex offenses involving minors, order, and strengthen the sex offender registry. Last year's convictions include Danilo Gamboa, who faced eight years in jail for sexually abusing a 14-year-old, and Ernesto Orellana, who was sentenced to five years for molesting three girls, ages 5-12, while also undergoing mandatory psychological counseling. Also, Santos Sotelo received a five-year jail sentence after molesting a 10-year-old, the LA City Attorney's Office reported.
Hydee Feldstein Soto stands as the first female City Attorney in the history of Los Angeles, leading a team of nearly 1,000 legal professionals since her election in November 2022.
