The Fort Worth City Council is poised to vote next week on whether to funnel financial support toward a Vietnam War memorial meant to commemorate local servicemembers. The proposed site for this homage to the fallen will be in Veterans Memorial Park at 4120 Camp Bowie Blvd, with elements designed by artist Michael Pavlovsky.

Started as an initiative by the Tarrant County Vietnam Memorial Foundation in 2020, this project aims to solemnly honor the over 220 servicemembers from Tarrant County who perished in the Vietnam War and educate the public on the impact of the conflict. A statement reported by the Fort Worth City claimed, "The site will provide a place to remember and educate current and future generations about the Vietnam War." Breaking ground ceremonially in November 2020, the Fort Worth Art Commission has since put forward its stamp of approval on the sculpture component of the park in November 2021.

Veterans Memorial Park isn't a stranger to such memorials. As a war memorial since 1950, it houses several tributes, including memorials for the Texas 36th, a nod to Flanders Field, and recognition for local Medal of Honor recipients. The park is home to two World War II-era naval missiles and a Navy anchor, celebrating the USS Fort Worth commissioning. The City works closely with the foundation, through the Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department (PARD), to make sure the memorial meets city requirements.

With an expected price tag of $335,000, those inclined to support the effort can find more information online. The city council is considering matching up to $200,000 of the memorial costs using the Future Community Partnerships Fund.
