A tragic fire at an animal sanctuary in Long Island took the life of its founder, Christopher Arsenault, and an estimated 100 cats yesterday morning. According to FOX 5 NY, the blaze occurred at the Happy Cat Sanctuary on Dourland Road in Medford where Arsenault had been caring for roughly 300 felines. Reports suggest he perished while attempting to rescue the animals.

Early investigations have ruled out arson, although the cause behind the inferno remains under scrutiny. Witnesses recounted hearing an explosion, thought to be connected to an outdoor heater or a propane tank. In a statement obtained by FOX 5 NY, a volunteer shared, "He woke up, and he was trying to put the fire out, and he kept going back in and out of the house to get cats out, and then he went in, and he didn't come out." Amidst the chaos, over a dozen volunteers with supplies and carriers battled to save any surviving cats.

In the wake of the disaster, community grief is palpable. News 12 reports that the sanctuary, which Arsenault was planning to relocate upstate, lost approximately 100 cats to the fire. Fortunately, between 150 to 200 cats survived the ordeal, and a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated, amassing over $130,000 for the animals' medical care.

Rescue efforts persist as volunteers from Strong Island Animal Rescue League continue to search for felines that remain unaccounted for following the fire. While many have been rescued, there is concern for those still missing, with funds raised earmarked for their treatment and care.
