A tragic incident unfolded in Orange as a 66-year-old Garden Grove man lost his life after his Jeep SUV was struck by a passenger train. As per reports by KTLA, the collision took place at the intersection of Glassell Street and Taft Avenue at around 7:02 p.m. on Thursday. The Orange Police Department and Orange City firefighters responded to the scene, where they found the vehicle had been hit by a train, necessitating the extrication of the driver before being rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
While initial details were scarce, it was reported that witnesses had observed the railroad crossing arms being lowered as the man proceeded to drive through the lighted safety barriers, leading to the devastating crash. The subsequent investigation had to temporarily disrupt traffic on Taft Avenue as authorities worked to understand the sequence of events. Detective Rocha has been assigned to spearhead the inquiry, and information from the public is still sought after, as mentioned in a statement on the Orange Police Department Facebook page.
Following the impact, a photo from the accident site illustrated the severity of the damage, with the Jeep SUV being significantly mangled. Firefighters who attended the scene employed heavy rescue equipment to free the man from the wreckage. Despite their efforts, an update from the Orange Police Department's Facebook post later revealed that the man had succumbed to his injuries at 10:02 p.m. on the night of the incident.
While the factors leading to this grave event are still under investigation, authorities have not ruled out the possibility that drugs or alcohol could have been involved. "At this time, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor for the collision," officials noted in their communications.
