On Monday, traffic on the 110 Freeway in Gardena became a slippery situation after a semi-trailer truck carrying coconut oil flipped onto its side and spilled its contents. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. and, according to ABC7, forced a closure of the southbound 110 Freeway transition to the eastbound 91 Freeway, which lasted for hours.

The transition road remained closed until approximately 8:30 p.m. that evening. As reported by NBC, officials initially predicted a much earlier time of reopening, around 5:30 p.m., underestimating the cleanup efforts required.

Though many details of the crash remain unclear, what's known is that the incident did not result in any injuries. CBS News reported that the driver managed to exit the semi-truck without harm. The California Highway Patrol was on the scene, but the total volume of coconut oil spilled during the incident was not immediately known.

Cleanup crews worked diligently to address the slick caused by the spilled coconut oil, with Caltrans workers seen dumping sand over the oil to absorb as much of it as possible. After which, a street sweeper drove through the sandy mess to help clear the roadway, according to CBS News. No further information has been disclosed concerning how the truck became overturned while emergency crews at the scene coordinated the clearing efforts.
