The Ventura County Superior Court Judge Paul Feldman has decided that there's enough evidence for Zarbab Ali, a Hawthorne resident accused of murdering Simi Valley woman Rachel Castillo, to face trial. The preliminary hearing, which lasted two days, brought forth charges that include first-degree murder with multiple special allegations. According to the Ventura District Attorney's office, Ali will also need to answer to the allegations of the use of a deadly weapon, murder for financial gain, and murder using lying in wait, in addition to unlawfully mutilating or acting with sexual contact upon a human corpse.

Castillo's case began on November 10, 2022, when signs of a violent attack in the apartment she shared with her sister led to a 911 call. Castillo was nowhere to be found, yet her belongings remained. It took three days to sadly locate her body in the remote expanse of Antelope Valley. Ali was arrested on the same day her body was discovered, after a prompt and thorough investigation by the Simi Valley Police Department Detective Bureau. The Senior Deputy District Attorney, David Russell, from the Major Crimes Homicide Unit, is set to prosecute the case, vowing to "present the full scope of evidence in pursuit of justice," he was quoted in a statement obtained by the District Attorney's office.

"This was a senseless and brutal killing that shocked our community," District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said. The commitment to securing justice for Castillo and her family is evident as the District Attorney's office stands firm in its resolve. Russell also expressed gratitude for the efforts of law enforcement, saying, "We are grateful to the detectives, officers, and special agents who worked diligently on this case." The communication from the District Attorney's office was disseminated by Joey Buttitta, their Communications Manager/PIO.

Zarbab Ali is scheduled to next appear in court on April 23, 2025, for an information arraignment, marking another step forward in the unfolding of this tragic event's legal proceedings. The hearing is slated for 9:00 a.m. in Courtroom 12 at Ventura County Superior Court, as the community anticipatorily waits to see how justice will continue to navigate through the corridors of the legal system in response to this violent crime.
