Queen Anne's County was the scene of a camper trailer fire last Friday, where a woman's life was potentially saved thanks to the alertness of her pet dog. WMDT reported that the fire occurred on Dogwood Court, causing about $10,000 in damages to the victim's accommodation.
The owner, asleep at the onset of the flames, was roused by her dogs. Despite her efforts to douse the fire, her attempts were in vain. She exited the trailer with minor injuries. While the dogs survived, two cats are still missing. A team of forty firefighters from the Crumpton Volunteer Fire Department was able to subdue the fire in roughly 15 minutes, but not before the trailer was deemed a total loss.
The incident took place in a Sunline Solaris camper, with Shore News Network identifying the occupant as Dawn Reed, who received non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the University of Maryland Medical Center at Chestertown. According to the same source, the onset of the fire was determined to be an accidental electrical failure inside the trailer, which lacked any smoke alarms or fire suppression systems.
Post-incident support for Reed has involved family members and the American Red Cross as she copes with the loss of her home and continues to hope for the safe return of her two cats that investigators and emergency responders are trying to locate.
