Travelers flying out of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to the U.S. mainland, Alaska, or Guam should allow for extra time before their flights. The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a bottleneck at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection stations due to limited staffing. As a result, passengers may experience extended pre-flight baggage inspection times.
Starting today, travelers should be aware that after 8 a.m., only one inspection station will be open in Lobby 7 and one in Lobby 8. For early morning travelers, the inspection station in Lobby 7, located in front of the American Airlines check-in counters, will be open from 5 to 8 a.m. However, the inspection station in front of the ANA counters in Lobby 8 will be closed indefinitely.
Alaska Airlines passengers need not worry, as the inspection station in Lobby 5 will open at 8:55 a.m., aligning with the opening of the airline's check-in counters. All other USDA inspection stations, unaffected by the new schedule, will be open starting at 5 a.m., according to the Department of Transportation.
The USDA inspections are essential not just for checking weight and size limits, but as a critical defense against the spread of plants, insects, and plant diseases. While the process may seem like a hassle, it's necessary to protect the island's ecological integrity. To ensure smooth travel, it's best to plan ahead and allow for extra time. Safe travels.
