According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, we're looking at moderate trade winds favoring windward and mauka areas today before easing off this evening. The usual pattern is expected to shift Wednesday through Friday, with a disturbance above the islands potentially bringing heavier showers and a chance of thunderstorms.

The trade winds, which are being generated by a 1028 mb high northeast of Honolulu, are expected to chill out as a cold front approaches. The NWS reports that this will give way to a convective shower pattern, especially over the western islands, and we might see some sea breezes kicking in as a result. Come weekend, however, the trades are set to make a gradual comeback, so don't put those umbrellas away just yet.

The NWS indicates that surf along north and west facing shores is going to dwindle as we head into midweek due to an easing northwest swell. That being said, there's a fresh north-northwest swell on the horizon by late Thursday, so you could be in for a treat with surf potentially approaching advisory levels.

Boaters should be wary – a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM HST this evening. The NWS advises this is particularly important for waters around the Big Island. And for those lounging on south facing shores, expect the surf to stay on the mellow side throughout the week.
