A young Honduran man, identified as Carlos Gonzalez-Vargas, 21, has received a sentence of nearly 13 years for his involvement in an armed robbery of a Family Dollar store in Houston. The 150-month sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal after Gonzalez-Vargas pled guilty on Feb. 7 to discharging a firearm during and in relation to a violent crime. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Gonzalez-Vargas, who is not a U.S. citizen, is expected to face deportation proceedings after serving his prison term.
During the robbery, which occurred on Jan. 16, 2023, Gonzalez-Vargas, alongside three others, demanded cash and opened fire on an employee who was too slow to comply, striking her in the leg. Captured by surveillance, Gonzalez-Vargas made his identity easier for law enforcement to pinpoint by wearing a distinctive pair of sneakers. Later posting Instagram selfies with the firearm, Gonzalez-Vargas shot at a 13-year-old child one month after the robbery, affiliated with a gang at the time.
The subsequent arrest of Gonzalez-Vargas occurred when he was embroiled in a street fight involving the same minor and wearing the same distinctive sneakers identified in the robbery footage. This chain of events led to a swift apprehension by law enforcement. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with support from the Houston Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stuart Tallichet, who prosecuted the case, utilized leads from ATF's National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). Offering a platform for capturing and comparing ballistic evidence, NIBIN is a critical tool for solving and preventing violent crimes involving firearms. More information about the NIBIN program can found at the ATF's official website.
