An investigation is currently underway following a fatal shooting incident near Westminster Dog Park in Venice. The incident occurred late Wednesday night, just before 10:30 p.m., according to reports from the Los Angeles Police Department obtained by ABC7. Upon arriving at the scene on Pacific Avenue, officers discovered a deceased man in the parking lot.
Further details are limited, however, it has been gathered that the victim was a local homeless man known for his willingness to assist others. He reportedly intervened in a couple's argument shortly before the shooting, as CBS News mentioned, witnesses saw him stepping in before being shot by the alleged shooter, who then fled the scene.
Authorities continued their investigation into Thursday morning, focusing on an apartment complex near Pacific and Westminster Avenue. The Los Angeles Police Department, which has not yet arrested the suspect, waited for a search warrant to press ahead with their inquiries, as stated by the ABC7 report. Details about the search warrant have not been disclosed.
The suspect, described only as a man, was last seen escaping in a Maserati, which authorities later found near the apartment complex. This discovery did not immediately lead to apprehension. As per information provided by witnesses, the gray or charcoal-colored vehicle became a key part of the search, as KTLA reported. A standoff at an apartment building followed the incident, but as Fox LA reported, it has since been clarified that the situation was no longer a standoff by Thursday morning.
Those acquainted with the victim, affectionately nicknamed 'Turtle', are mourning his loss. "Turtle was a traveler, he came around every now again from what I understand. Our friendship was not very long, it was a meaningul for the short amount of time that we had together," said Marc, a friend of the deceased, in an interview with FOX 11. Marc has taken it upon himself to ensure Turtle's dog, Max, is looked after and to establish a memorial in his friend's honor.
