After a notable tenure of ten years at the helm of Kalamazoo College, President Jorge G. Gonzalez is set to retire in the summer of 2026. Known for his dedication to the institution, Gonzalez has been credited with leading significant growth and development initiatives throughout his presidency. According to a press release obtained by WOODTV, he remarked, "Serving as K’s president has been the greatest honor of my life."
Under Gonzalez's leadership, the college has seen the launch and completion of the Brighter Light Campaign, which successfully raised over $203 million. The campaign, noted by MLive for being the largest in the school's history, aimed to bolster student access and enhance faculty and campus life. As president, Gonzalez has always sought to directly address the issue, working toward bolstering both curricular and non-curricular experiences for students.
Gonzalez's presidency also oversaw the construction of a new natatorium and the renovation of various campus facilities, improvements cited as pivotal to enriching the student experience. The Kalamazoo College press release highlighted the strides in diversity witnessed under his tenure, especially among first-generation and Pell-eligible students. His leadership during precarious moments, such as guiding the institution through the COVID-19 pandemic, has been commended by the college community and beyond, as per WWMT.
Jody Clark ’80, Board Chair, praised Gonzalez in a statement shared by WWMT, saying, "The Board of Trustees has deeply appreciated President Gonzalez’s leadership. He leads with vision, optimism, wisdom, and trust." As Gonzalez continues to serve until his retirement date, the Board of Trustees plans to immediately commence a national search for Kalamazoo College's 19th president, with the assistance from Storbeck Search and a committee that includes trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
