Lakewood is doling out free mulch to its residents in May, and it's precisely the kind of green initiative that matches the spring spirit. According to the City of Lakewood, those with proof of residency are invited to collect this garden boon from the city greenhouse located at 9556 W. Yale Ave. The pick-up times are set from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., on consecutive Saturdays, May 3 and May 10.
Now, before you rush out your door with a wheelbarrow in tow, here's the scoop: this mulch comes from Lakewood's operations, particularly tree trimming and fallen limb and leaf collections. Working Saturdays, the staff equipped with a loader will be on-hand to help people fill their bags, containers, or trucks with the mulch. Working as a weed barrier and soil conditioner, this reground mulch is touted as not only a gift to your garden soil but also as a decorator for your landscaping ambitions.
However, this free-for-all has its limits. Reserved solely for personal use by residents, commercial contractors are to Frankly leave this freebie alone, this mulch is not for them. Also, for those considering a bit of spring cleaning for their yard, note that vegetation drop-offs aren't being accepted at this time. But don't lose heart just yet, leaf recycling and later, tree recycling opportunities will be circling back in November and December, respectively.
