The City of Las Vegas has rolled out the red carpet for its collegiate ice warriors, the UNLV Skatin' Rebels, who have carved their names into the frozen annals of hockey glory. The City Council is set to honor the Rebels during their April 2nd meeting at 9 a.m. The recognition takes place at City Hall's Council Chambers, for anyone interested in witnessing a slice of local history up close.
After a stinging defeat last year, the Rebels bounced back with the ferocity of a Las Vegas summer, outscoring Adrian College with a triumphant 7-3 win, according to the City of Las Vegas press release. Started in 2005, this self-funded, scrappy squad has shown that even desert dwellers can conquer the ice.
But the accolades don’t stop at the rink's edge. The City Council meeting is also set to honor a local community beacon, Andy Armenian. Having moved to Las Vegas two decades ago, Armenian has been instrumental in community service and celebrating his cultural roots, as he once served as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia in Las Vegas.
Education and athletics within Clark County will also be under the Council’s spotlight, with Ward 3 Councilwoman Olivia Diaz commending young local talents. With a flourish of violins and the charge of a football snap, strands of accomplishment weave through her ward, as Diaz will acknowledge the achievements of K.O. Knudson Middle School's Mariachi Los Pumas group and the seemingly unstoppable Sunrise Elementary School flag football team.
For those unable to attend, the proceedings will be broadcast live on City of Las Vegas TV. The City Council also welcomes public comments, allowing citizens to share their views on the agenda. Agendas can be previewed on the City of Las Vegas website.
