A fire in Leoni Township caused significant damage to a home and resulted in the loss of four family dogs, officials reported Wednesday. The blaze, which affected a house at 1275 Breezy Lane, prompted a multi-department response to fight the flames that began on the ground level and quickly spread upward. According to ClickOnDetroit, it took several hours for fire crews to bring the fire under control.

Initial reports suggest that the fire began in the kitchen and might have been uninterruptedly burning for hours before an off-duty firefighter, living in proximity, noticed and reported it. The Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety extended their gratitude through a social media post to several local fire departments, including Grass Lake Fire and Napoleon Fire, for their assistance on the scene. "An off duty Firefighter, who lives nearby, was among the first to report the fire. He observed flames coming from the east side of the residence," they noted, describing the response efforts to control the blaze.

The house sustained significant damage, with the fire affecting the attic and void spaces above the main floor and garage. No one was reported to be home at the time of the fire. However, the family’s four dogs could not be saved.

A full investigation by the Blackman-Leoni Fire Investigators will begin to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Darin R. McIntosh, Director of Public Safety, encouraged anyone seeking additional information to contact the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety.
