Los Angeles County is injecting a significant sum into its workforce, with $32 million earmarked to bolster jobs and training for over 2,300 workers through 2026, as per recent announcements by the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO). These funds are designated for two new initiatives focused on recovery and resilience in the wake of natural disasters and ongoing economic challenges.
"From disaster recovery jobs to career-building training, we're making sure people have the tools to rebuild their lives and futures," Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath conveyed, highlighting the state and federal collaborations making this investment possible. The Fire Recovery and Resilience Workforce Program, absorbing $14.2 million of the investment, is tailored for workers affected by recent windstorms and wildfires. It provides temporary employment opportunities and job training, paired with a supportive framework including benefits and stipends, according to the announcement.
The second pillar of this initiative is the High Road Training Partnership (HRTP) Fund, injecting $17.8 million into trailblazing training models that prioritize equity, job quality, and climate resilience. The HRTP Fund, with aid from strategic bodies such as Dalberg LLC and the UCLA Labor Center, is set to support an estimated 1,300 workers from historically disinvested communities. "Dalberg, a strategic advisory firm dedicated exclusively to social impact, has worked with job training programs all around the world – and the HRTP model is the best approach we've seen," Joe Dougherty, Partner at Dalberg, asserted.
Prospective participants and partners can already engage with these programs, as both are open for registration and application. Those interested in the Fire Recovery and Resilience Workforce Program can learn more and express interest via the DEO's dedicated webpage for the initiative or visit one of the America’s Job Centers of California (AJCCs). The HRTP Fund is also welcoming applications through another specially created portal by the DEO. The DEO is also facilitating informational sessions and materials such as toolkits and FAQs to guide applicants, further enriching the package with technical assistance and workshops for the duration of the grant period.
These workforce developments are all part of a broader strategy by the DEO to create life-changing opportunities for job seekers and entrepreneurs alike. With a $19.1 million LA Region Small Business and Worker Relief Fund also recently launched, assisting over 1,300 businesses and 2,300 workers, the DEO stays committed to driving an inclusive economy. For further insights on DEO's role and services, the public is directed to their official website, with encouragement to follow the agency's social media channels for up-to-date information.
