A fire broke out in a two-story apartment building in Central-Alameda on Monday morning. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that first arriving companies found fire showing from the second floor of the structure at 1598 E Vernon Av, according to a LAFD alert. The firefighting units shifted to offensive mode to combat the flames engulfing the building.
Despite the ferocity of the fire, the LAFD achieved a 'knockdown' within 24 minutes, with 47 firefighters responding to the call. Before a partial roof collapse in one corner of the building occurred, all firefighters were called off the roof, as noted in a follow-up LAFD alert that also corrected the initial address of the incident to 1597 E Vernon Av. The collapse risked the lives of firefighters operating on the structure, highlighting the perilous conditions endured during such emergencies.
The fire department stated, "no injuries reported at this time," ensuring that personnel on-site remained unharmed. Units remained on the scene thereafter to perform overhaul operations, ensuring that the fire was completely out and the site was safe. The LAFD provided no further details on the potential cause of the fire or the extent of the damage to the building.
