Marking a significant step forward in Los Angeles' public transit development, the LA Metro has announced June 6 as the official opening date for the highly anticipated LAX/Metro Transit Center. According to a report by KTLA, the new transit hub, situated at 96th Street and Airport Boulevard in Westchester, will be the largest in Metro's network.
The transit center promises to enhance airport connectivity, directly linking LAX to Metro's K and C lines. "The wait is nearly over, Los Angeles," Metro Board Chair and County Supervisor Janice Hahn expressed in a statement obtained by CBS News Los Angeles. She added, "And when the LAX People Mover finally opens, we will truly have an international airport that connects people from inside the terminals to the world beyond through Metro." T
While the center's light rail station, bus plaza, bike share, and parking amenities will become operational from June, the Automated People Mover's tentative start date is slated for early next year, following delays, as noted by KTLA. Until then, a bus shuttle service will bridge the gap between the station and the airport terminals.
The project is not only anticipated to serve daily travelers but is also seen as vital for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics. The transit center aims to significantly cut down traffic congestion and provide a smoother experience for an influx of international visitors expected during these global events.
Additional features of the center mentioned by NBC Los Angeles include a multilevel bicycle hub with secure parking, a pedestrian plaza, and a 16-bay bus plaza that will bolster the station’s multi-modal approach to transportation. Commuters looking forward to this opening are counting down the days until the full integration of the LAX/Metro Transit Center creates a new nexus for travel in the Los Angeles region.
