Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, in conjunction with City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez, has advanced the city's efforts to combat homelessness with the latest Inside Safe operation. The initiative, which took place in Pacoima, successfully transitioned more than 15 individuals from life on the streets into housing, while also clearing several RVs and cars used as makeshift homes. Visuals from the operation were made accessible, according to an announcement by the mayor's office.
During her State of the City address this Monday, Mayor Bass doubled down on her commitment to systemic solutions to the homelessness epidemic. She juxtaposed the rises in public safety with a notable decrease in homelessness and crime rates in Los Angeles, contrasting with an 18 percent nationwide uptick in homelessness. "We are not stopping or slowing down," Mayor Bass declared. "We are moving thousands more people from the streets than before we took office, and more Angelenos are being moved into permanent housing than ever before."
Since the year's start, over 450 Los Angeles residents have found shelter through Inside Safe interventions, as indicated by the mayor's office. The program has also led to the resolution of more than 90 encampments citywide, showcasing an aggressive approach towards addressing the crisis since Mayor Bass declared a state of emergency on the issue. This multi-pronged strategy encompasses homelessness prevention to keeping individuals from becoming unhoused movement of encampment dwellers into safer living conditions.
As a part of this initiative, tent encampments have been dismantled across every council district, translating to thousands of individuals being housed last year compared to 2022. As per Mayor Bass, efforts are ongoing to not only improve the quality of services for the unhoused but also enhance the cost-effectiveness of these programs. "Mayor Bass has worked to improve services provided for unhoused Angelenos coming inside and has also been vocal about the need to make homelessness programs more cost effective as this urgent work continues," says the mayoral announcement.
