A man was fatally shot by Los Angeles police officers Sunday evening in Reseda after he allegedly fired at a police helicopter. According to KTLA, LAPD officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon involving a suspect armed with a handgun.
The incident occurred just before 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Reseda and Victory boulevards. Officers pursued the suspect, described only as a male adult, into an apartment complex on Victory Boulevard. The LAPD reported that the suspect appeared to have fired his handgun at the airship, officials noted. However, "it does not appear that the airship was struck by gunfire," said Bruce Borihanh from the LAPD, as was reported by NBC Los Angeles.
The encounter escalated when the suspect ran to a rear alley of the apartment building. There, he was confronted by police officers, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. ABC7 reported that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department. Despite the violence of the encounter, no citizens or officers sustained injuries.
Authorities recovered a handgun at the scene, and it will be booked as evidence. As part of the ongoing investigation, detectives are currently reviewing video and physical evidence. The identity of the man who was shot has not been released, and police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
