On the streets of the Bronx, a significant bust has delivered a blow to another chapter of gang violence that has, for years, maintained community members in a grip of fear. Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, alongside New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, announced the indictment of 20 alleged members of the “800 YGz” gang. This crew is held responsible for an outbreak of violence, encapsulated by one murder and 14 shootings.

According to the Bronx District Attorney's Office, the sweep of arrests and the indictment signal the end of years-long investigations into the activities of the gang, revealing a callous disregard for human life. “Brazen, senseless violence threatened the lives of school children, shoppers, along with anyone who walked down the street in daytime, violating the basic right to be safe. These defendants allegedly shot at rival gangs without any regard for the innocent bystanders caught in between the line of fire. In one incident, they shot a man in the head and killed him. Half the defendants were teenagers when they committed these crimes. We must provide more resources for young people, so they don’t choose gangs or guns,” District Attorney Clark said in a statement. She pointed out that despite the age of the defendants, with half being teenagers at the time of these crimes, their actions have contributed to the community's unrest.

The accumulated efforts of investigators have led to the recovery of nine firearms, some of which have been linked through ballistic evidence to additional shootings across the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. Mayor Adams hailed the city's ongoing commitment to safety, underscoring that New York City remains "the safest big city in America," and applauding the hard work of law enforcement in making significant strides in combating gun violence, as detailed by the Bronx District Attorney's Office.

In detailing the gravity of the situation, Commissioner Tisch condemned the brazen nature of the gang's activities, which saw schoolyards and city buses becoming battlegrounds. The Bronx District Attorney's Office highlighted a litany of violent episodes perpetrated by this gang, including one particularly heinous act where shooters targeted a man while children and families were in close proximity.

The announcement details a 73-count indictment, with charges ranging from murder and attempted murder to weapon possession and assault. The defendants, suspected members of the 800 YGz gang based out of 800 East 180th Street, allegedly terrorized the West Farms neighborhood, engaging in shootouts that often endangered, or outright harmed, innocent civilians. The district attorney's office expressed gratitude for the coordinated efforts of the NYPD Gun Violence Suppression Division, the Bronx Warrant Squad, and precinct detectives in bringing the alleged perpetrators to justice.

Seven of the indicted individuals were arraigned before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Joseph McCormack on Tuesday, as reported by the prosecutors' office. The next court date is marked for April 21.
