A man was taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department after making threats against workers on a Metro rail expansion project in Lawndale, according to authorities. In an announcement detailed by a KTLA report on Wednesday, it was confirmed that Daniel Doyle Scallion, 28, had electronically sent threats of violence on February 20, stating that Metro employees would be "shot."
The arrest followed a comprehensive investigation by the Sheriff's Transit Services Bureau, which successfully traced the origin of the threats without public detailing of the methods used to identify Scallion. He remains incarcerated with bail set at $50,000, with a court appearance scheduled for Friday. In a statement obtained by KTLA, Capt. Shawn Kehoe emphasized the department's dedication to the protection of Metro workers and the public. In a separate account by the Los Angeles Times, a Metro representative characterized the violent threat as an unusual event against the context of ongoing complaints from locals who have expressed concerns about the rail project's impact on their neighborhood.
Authorities arrested Scallion early Wednesday following the execution of a search warrant at his home, as more than two dozen deputies were involved; despite the arrest, Los Angeles County court records do not show prior cases or formal charges against Scallion, a dog walker by profession according to his LinkedIn profile, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. Subsequently, the Sheriff's Information Bureau conveyed the Sheriff's firm resolve against threats and urged the community to report any suspicious activities.
Community concern was heightened as residents, like Chelsea Schreiber, who lives close to the project site, felt left in the dark regarding details of the threat. Schreiber, who has been a resident of Lawndale for almost a decade, learned about the situation from her husband, who witnessed the arrest and noted that Scallion was known for setting off fireworks. Meanwhile, despite the investigation, work on the C-Line extension, which aims to connect Redondo Beach to Torrance, continued with visible security enhancements on-site.
