The City of Durham is getting ready to unveil the Maple Creek Apartments, a refurbished affordable housing complex, with a celebration event scheduled for this Friday, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the apartments' community room, located at 2816 Ross Rd., Durham, NC. The ceremony, hosted by the City of Durham Community Development Department, marks the completion of a $10.1 million project that promises to strengthen the housing fabric of East Durham.
These apartments, once known as the Ross Road Apartments, have undergone a significant transformation since being acquired by Reinvestment Partners in 2019. Consisting of 20 garden-style and 22 townhome-style apartments, all 42 units now boast brand-new kitchens, baths, and vital energy-efficient updates to the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. The refurbished site also comes with heightened community amenities including a meeting room and laundry facilities, according to a recent announcement by the City of Durham.
Addressing the challenge of affordability, 33 apartments at Maple Creek are open to households earning up to 60% of the area median income (AMI)—$48,180 annually for a family of four, with another nine units designated for households making up to 30% AMI or $31,770 for a family of four. Further reflecting its commitment to support its most vulnerable citizens, the project integrates supportive housing units for individuals and families with disabilities, designed to afford comfortable living combined with services intended to maintain stable housing situations.
The City of Durham has invested significant resources into this project, contributing over $6 million through the Forever Home, Durham program. Other partners who played a key role in the success of this endeavor include the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, Alliance Health, Duke University, Truist Bank, Self-Help Ventures Fund, and notably, the former U.S. Representative David Price, who were all fundamental in breathing new life into the Maple Creek Apartments. The involvement of the Durham Soil & Water Conservation District, carrying initiatives forward dedicated to sustainable living in urban landscapes, further demonstrates a communal approach towards building resilient infrastructures.
