A hundred days after wildfires devastated the Pacific Palisades, Mayor Karen Bass is highlighting rapid recovery efforts that have exceeded projected timelines and set new benchmarks, according to a report from the Mayor’s Office.
One key milestone includes the Palisades Branch Library, which has been fully cleared of debris by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in just six days, well ahead of the initial 30-day timeline. Last week, Mayor Bass shared updates on other key community facilities, including the local recreation center and playground, which are also in stages of clearing and planning. The recreation center’s reconstruction will be supported by a new public-private partnership with LA Strong Sports and Steadfast LA, alongside local Palisades organizations.
“My top priority has been to get people home – that means rebuilding houses, but it also means rebuilding the places that make up the heart of this community,” Mayor Bass said at a recent event, emphasizing the importance of public spaces. The Army Corps reportedly prioritized cleanup at the Mayor’s request. Utility services such as water and power were restored to the area within two months—an improvement compared to delays seen in past disasters, including the Camp Fire in Paradise, California.
To fast-track recovery, Mayor Bass enacted executive measures to streamline rebuilding efforts and implement new fire-prevention strategies. These include tax relief for small businesses and infrastructure reinforcements such as concrete barriers and sandbags in landslide-prone zones. Support for fire survivors has also been scaled up. A Disaster Recovery Center was launched to centralize services from multiple agencies. A One-Stop Rebuilding Center was also opened to speed up reconstruction for homes and businesses. Impacted Worker and Family Recovery Centers now offer job placement and financial support.
The Mayor also signed ordinances protecting residents from eviction and price gouging, aligning with the administration’s rapid recovery agenda. To secure more funding, Mayor Bass led a City Council delegation to Sacramento, meeting with state officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, to advocate for continued state and federal support. City Librarian John F. Szabo praised the recovery efforts, calling the Army Corps’ swift work on the library site a “hopeful signal for what’s to come.”
The ongoing pace and coordination of the Palisades recovery is being viewed as a potential model for future disaster response efforts across California.
