Michigan State Police restored a bit of faith in serendipity and honesty for one individual in Monroe when they returned a sum of $5,000 in cash that was, against odds, found lying in the street. This unfolding of good fortune occurred last Friday when a patrolling trooper, hailing from the Monroe Post, came across the money strewn on Huber Drive. The seemingly untraceable cash was spotted in a place as mundane as the middle of the road, and yet it held the weight of someone's significant loss.
Initially at a loss for leads, the trooper took it upon themselves to touch base with a neighboring bank. Luck seemed to have been riding shotgun that day as the trooper discovered that a person had just withdrawn an amount matching that which was found. In a statement obtained by CBS News, "The trooper was able to convince the subject that this was not a scam and was able to return the money to its rightful owner." A detail that could only be appreciated by the owner, the money had been tucked into their pants pocket after withdrawing it from the bank and had somehow fallen out.
Miscommunications almost thwarted the money's journey back to its owner. Following up on the lead, when the trooper tried contacting the rightful owner, their multiple attempts were met with disconnects; the owner hung up several times, presumably skeptical of a swindle. According to the MSP First District's social media post, the customer "must have been listening to our public service announcements on being a victim of fraud and believed he was being scammed."
