Michigan State University (MSU) is teaming up with tech giant Apple to open an Apple Manufacturing Academy in downtown Detroit this summer. The academy is expected to significantly boost small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses nationwide. With a home at the First National Building and offering both in-person and virtual programming, this initiative is tapping into Detroit's resurgent downtown energy, according to information released by The Detroit News.

In a statement obtained by The Detroit News, Apple's senior vice president of operations, Sabih Khan, said, "The Apple Manufacturing Academy will train businesses across America to implement smart manufacturing techniques that are creating opportunity and shaping the future of technology." The academy is positioned as Apple's investment in American innovation and advanced manufacturing; Apple engineers and MSU experts will collaborate to provide vital expertise and advice to participating companies on effectively leveraging artificial intelligence and smart manufacturing strategies.

The academy's curriculum will cover project management, manufacturing process optimization, and leadership skills, echoing MSU's strengths in supply chain, logistics, engineering, and packaging. Training enhances productivity, efficiency, and quality within supply chains. As noted in an MSU Today report, MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz stressed the partnership's alignment with MSU's mission to address global issues and embrace community outreach.

In addition to the manufacturing academy, MSU and Apple are already connected through the Apple Developer Academy, which, since its inception in 2021, has graduated about 200 participants annually. Applications are currently open for its fall 2025 cohort. The academy represents a successful collaboration that is already yielding results. This partnership expansion signifies a strong commitment to nurturing tech talent and revitalizing and modernizing manufacturing practices that could potentially reshape the sector.
