Milwaukee has been grappling with the tragic loss of a six-year-old child, whose life was abruptly ended by a fatal gunshot last Tuesday evening. Following an investigation into the circumstances that led to the demise of the young child, two individuals face criminal charges. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against Daquela S. Collins and Quintell S. Collins, according to a social media post by the Milwaukee Police Department today.
Daquela's charges include a count of Neglecting a Child – Consequence is Death – As Party to a Crime and Straw Purchasing of Firearm. The legal repercussions she may face are substantial, with possible punishments including up to 35 years in prison and up to $125,000 in fines. Her counterpart, Quintell, faces a more extensive array of charges: Neglecting a Child – Consequence is Death – As Party to a Crime, Second Degree Reckless Homicide, two counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Second Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Operating a Motor Vehicle to Flee or to Elude an Officer, and Obstructing an Officer, all with the caveat of Habitual Criminality Repeater, which could result in a staggering 116-year imprisonment and $295,000 in fines if convicted.
The incident occurred on the 4200 block of N. 51st Boulevard at around 9:30 p.m., as reported by the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD). The child, who was days away from celebrating another birthday, found access to a gun and suffered the fatal injury that followed.
The MPD's reminder to the community comes as a poignant directive in light of the tragedy. "Teach children they should never handle firearms," the MPD stated, insisting on responsible gun ownership and the importance of locking firearms with gunlocks, securing them out of children’s reach. Also emphasizes the illegality of purchasing firearms for those prohibited from possessing them.
