A Milwaukee man was fatally shot during a confrontation with law enforcement in Iowa, after what began as a routine traffic stop escalated into an armed standoff. Vonderrick Rayford, 51, identified by the Dallas County Sheriff's Office, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, following Rayford's vehicle being pulled over for speeding on Interstate 80, as reported by WISN.
According to the sheriff's office, Rayford got out of the vehicle around 1:30 a.m. and began firing at a deputy "without provocation," resulting in a brief standoff, as noted by TMJ4. In the ensuing chaos, officers and deputies from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Adair County Sheriff's Office, Stuart Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, and the Adel Police Department converged on the scene to lend support.
FOX6Now reported law enforcement's account that Rayford, after initial shots were fired, continued to shoot at them "several more times," which led to them returning fire. Rayford was pronounced dead at the scene.
An additional investigation uncovered that Rayford had been driving a stolen vehicle from Colorado, and the gun he used in the shootout was also stolen. As per standard protocol, the Dallas County Sheriff's Department reported that the officers and deputies who discharged their weapons are on paid administrative leave, pending a full investigation. Details about which departments the officers and deputies were from have not been provided.
