Milwaukee's pioneering food hall, Crossroads Collective, has officially announced that it will cease operations after over six years serving the East Side community. The venue, located at 2238 N. Farwell Ave. will shut its doors for the last time on May 8. According to a post on its Facebook page provided by WTMJ, the collective noted that it was time "to pass the torch to a local restaurant expanding into the space," signifying an end to its tenure as a vibrant culinary incubator for budding local food businesses.
Opening its doors in December 2018 at the intersection of North and Farwell avenues, Crossroads Collective quickly became a prominent feature of Milwaukee's gastronomic scene. Throughout its operation, it has helped to launch various establishments, which would later go on to secure their own brick-and-mortar premises. Egg & Flour, Kawa Ramen & Sushi, and Scratch Ice Cream were among the local eateries to have found their beginnings within the walls of the Crossroads Collective. The food hall was recognized for its role in encouraging and supporting small food-related ventures, an effort that has been widely appreciated by both entrepreneurs and patrons. "Since opening, we’ve had the honor of hosting passionate vendors, welcoming thousands of guests, and helping launch businesses that have gone on to grow in big ways," the collective emphasized in a statement obtained by JSOnline.
The site itself has a rich history. Before becoming home to Crossroads Collective, the location hosted the renowned Oriental Pharmacy, a local landmark of social gatherings in the 1980s and early '90s, until its closure in 1995. A series of restaurants followed, but the space remained vacant in 2017 before being revitalized by the food hall concept the following year. The 7,000 square-foot space served as a nexus of culinary innovation and community engagement, shaping the identity of the corner it occupied on Milwaukee's East Side.
Although details about the new restaurant taking over the food hall location are not yet available, the change aligns with Crossroads Collective's original goal of supporting small businesses in Milwaukee. The identity of the new tenant has not been disclosed by the collective or New Land Enterprises. More information is expected as the May 8 closing date approaches, and the community is eager to see what comes next at this popular East Side location, as reported by TMJ4.
