Herman Calvin Brightman, from New Jersey, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for stalking and assaulting multiple women he met online. Posing as a nurse, Brightman utilized social media platforms and dating applications to foster connections with his victims, later erupting into episodes of brutal behavior, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office press release.
Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky emphasized the predatory nature of Brightman's actions, stating, “Herman Brightman preyed on women he met through online dating websites. By posing as a nurse, Brightman earned the trust of his victims, and then stalked, assaulted, and threatened them. With today’s lengthy prison sentence, Brightman can no longer inflict pain or fear in his victims. I commend the brave women who spoke out against Brightman to ensure that he was held accountable for his crimes,” as obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Among the harrowing accounts detailed in court filings, Brightman once brandished a knife at a woman and her child in the Bronx, coercing them to travel with him to New Jersey. Another time, as reported, he assaulted a Queens woman in her own home, where he threatened her with a knife, attempting to bind her hands and cover her mouth. In a sequence of fear that unfolded over several days, he bombarded the same woman with threatening phone calls after she ended the relationship.
Victim accounts paint a chilling picture of Brightman's wrath, following another victim from a bus stop to her home, only to assault her once they arrived. Strangulation, threats of death, and forced surveillance during a shower were all part of the ordeal that a fourth victim underwent in her Bronx home before being aided by a friend. Brightman was sentenced to ten years in prison, with an additional three years of supervised release.
U.S. District Judge John P. Cronan handed down the substantial sentence. According to the same press release, the New York City Police Department was commended for its exceptional investigative efforts, which led to Brightman's arrest and subsequent sentencing.
