The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation is delving into the circumstances that led to the death of Bruce Boyd, who was shot by police in Suffolk County last Friday. This comes after officers from the Suffolk County Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding a wellness check at a Brentwood residence. According to reports, Boyd confronted officers with knives in each hand and ignored commands to drop them, leading one of the officers to discharge their firearm, fatally wounding Boyd. The AG's office has made clear that this new probe is standard procedure under state law whenever an individual dies during an encounter with law enforcement.
As per an official statement from the Attorney General's office, the OSI operates under the mandate given by New York State Executive Law Section 70-b. After being transported to a local hospital, following the incident, Mr. Boyd was pronounced dead. This investigation will assess the events and conduct of the involved officers who, regardless of duty status, may have contributed to a person's death through actions or omissions.
Details on the incident remain limited at this time, with the AG's office cautioning that initial reports are subject to change. OSI continues its investigation, striving to understand the exact nature of the fatal shooting of Mr. Boyd.
