The popular pooch playground at Orion Oaks Dog Park is no more—at least when it comes to the dog dock. According to recent reports, the dock has been shut down due to a pesky E. coli problem, and it seems the issue is not just a drop in the bucket. FOX 2 Detroit relayed from Oakland County Parks that the dock was closed after bi-weekly tests last year came back with consistently unsafe E. coli levels, prompting the permanent closure over the past weekend.
Park officials are now focusing on the 2026 Orion Oaks Dog Park master plan, aiming to update the park’s amenities—something that's essential following the recent bacteria issue. As part of this long-term, broad plan, they’re considering adding a new water feature, which could provide dogs a safer way to cool off and play without compromising their health.
Oakland County hasn't taken its decision to turn tail on the dock lightly, stating, "This decision was made with the health and safety of our visitors and their pets as our top priority," FOX 2 Detroit reported. Meanwhile, visitors feeling adrift after the closure can anchor their hopes on the survey circling, which the county uses to fetch public opinion on what comes next.
Change is inevitable with the dock out of the wet picture, and officials are swimming in possibility. They are indeed actively seeking community input on the sort of upgrades they'd like to see, with a style of enhancements capable of keeping tails wagging despite the dock's demise—WXYZ reported that the park's survey is online and ready for opinions.
