In a legal development, Oakland County Judge Cheryl Matthews has denied the motion to remove and disqualify Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald from the case against Jennifer Crumbley, mother of the convicted Oxford High School shooter. The motion put forth by Crumbley’s attorney, Michael Dezsi, claimed unfair treatment due to alleged smear campaigns facilitated by the prosecutor's office and secret agreements with school officials. Matthews ruled that sanctions were appropriate as the court does not have "jurisdiction to decide the Motion and defers to the appellate court’s jurisdiction," in a statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit.

Prosecutor McDonald showed resolve, stating, "The court showed it has no tolerance for the defense’s misuse of the legal process, and they have been appropriately sanctioned," as reported by CBS News Detroit.

Dezsi voiced concerns over the hiring of public relations firms which, as per FOX 2 Detroit, allegedly ran smear campaigns against Crumbley that could bias the jury pool, however, McDonald's office rebutted this as unnecessary given Crumbley's own actions. The defense proposed the prosecutor’s actions might have tainted the legal process, but, the court refused to entertain these claims and instead sanctioned Dezsi.

While addressing the motion, Judge Matthews pointed out the duplicative nature of the allegations, with some already being considered in pending motions for acquittal or new trials. The motives behind the motion were thus questioned, and sanctions against Dezsi were imposed for the resources spent filing the motion. Matthews' ruling detailed that "Some of the grounds raised in the Motion to allegedly support disqualification are also asserted in the Motion for Judgment of Acquittal and/or for New Trial," as covered by CBS News Detroit.

This legal dispute comes as Jennifer Crumbley seeks a new trial following her conviction alongside her husband, James Crumbley, on charges of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the Oxford High School shooting. McDonald defended the decision to hire PR firms, stating that it was done transparently and with approval from county officials to handle the influx of media inquiries, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Despite the court's ruling, the defense's challenge to the prosecutor's involvement has been successfully dismissed, shifting the focus back to the appeals process.
