According to KTLA, the incident took place at Entrepreneur High School in Highland on Thursday, around 4:30 p.m., when officers attempted to intervene in a student brawl. Cellphone footage shows the chaotic scene with students embroiled in a physical altercation, ignoring the officers' efforts to quell the fight.
The situation intensified as several adults arrived and joined in, further complicating the officers' attempts at restoration of peace and leading to assaults on the officers; in fact, one of the teens seemed to pull a female officer's hair at one point — this is while the male officer tackled a teen to the ground. San Bernardino City Unified School District officials, speaking to KTLA, confirmed that two officers sustained physical assaults during the melee. Eventually, with the arrival of backup, the teens were handcuffed and taken into custody; their identities remain undisclosed due to their juvenile status.
Meanwhile, NBC Los Angeles reported that it's not clear how many students were detained following the fight. The police presence at the campus, governed by its high school board, comes from contracting for law enforcement services with the San Bernardino School District Police.
Additional details on the incident reveal confrontations involving not only students but also apparent family members, as highlighted in footage showing a woman telling an officer that the girl is her daughter, demanding them not to touch her, which is shortly followed by a return to the physical skirmish, according to CBS Los Angeles. Kandi Thompson, with a grandchild at Entrepreneur High School, shared communication from the school assuring that "at no time were any of our students or staff in danger, as the incident occurred after all students had been dismissed for the day." As for the legal repercussions stemming from the altercation, the District Attorney has not yet responded whether any charges will be pursued.
